This is also true for the gene that carries the &quot;blueprint&quot; for the protective protein alpha-1-antitrypsin. Various variations are known, which affect alpha-1-antitrypsin levels in the blood to varying degrees:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>M variant<\/strong>\u00a0This is the conventional, &quot;healthy&quot; variant. In this case, a normal alpha-1 antitrypsin level is produced with normal function. The M variant is found in most people.<\/li>\n<li>At the\u00a0<strong>Z-variant<\/strong>\u00a0This leads to clumping of the protective protein in the liver cells, preventing its release into the bloodstream. The result is a reduction in the alpha-1 antitrypsin level in the blood. Carriers of this variant are found primarily in Northern Europe and the Middle East.<\/li>\n<li>In southern Europe, this occurs more frequently.\u00a0<strong>S variant<\/strong>, in which there is usually a slightly higher concentration of alpha-1 antitrypsin in the blood than in the Z variant.<\/li>\n<li>In the case of the very rare occurrence\u00a0<strong>Zero variant<\/strong>\u00a0No protective protein is produced at all. This leads to an extremely high risk for the lungs, whereas the liver is not affected by this gene variant.<\/li>\n<li>Our scientific advisor, Dr. Timm Greulich, describes further <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha1-deutschland.org\/en\/seltene-mutationen\/\">very rare variants.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The effects of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency on the lungs usually only become apparent when both blueprints of the protective protein have certain deviations, i.e., when one has inherited a defective gene variant from each parent.<\/p>\n<p>The situation may be different with regard to the effects on the liver, as it has recently become apparent that carriers of both variants M and Z (PiMZ) may also have an increased predisposition for liver changes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\t\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div> \n\n\t<div  class=\"vc_col-sm-2 wpb_column column_container vc_column_container col no-extra-padding inherit_tablet inherit_phone\"  data-padding-pos=\"all\" data-has-bg-color=\"false\" data-bg-color=\"\" data-bg-opacity=\"1\" data-animation=\"\" data-delay=\"0\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"vc_column-inner\" >\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div> \n<\/div><\/div>\n\t\t<div id=\"fws_6a9101665ecd1\"  data-column-margin=\"default\" data-midnight=\"dark\" data-top-percent=\"5%\"  class=\"wpb_row vc_row-fluid vc_row full-width-section\"  style=\"padding-top: calc(100vw * 0.05); COPD is also known as &quot;smokers&#039; disease&quot;\u2014although there are other risk factors for COPD (e.g., exposure to dust).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Asthmatics:\u00a0<\/strong>The respiratory disease &quot;bronchial asthma&quot; can also show symptoms similar to alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha1-deutschland.org\/en\/aatm-assoziierte-begleiterkrankungen-pannikulitis-co\/\">Panniculitis<\/a>:\u00a0<\/strong>This refers to inflammation of the subcutaneous fat tissue. An alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency can also be the underlying cause of such a condition.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha1-deutschland.org\/en\/alpha-1-und-die-leber\/\">Liver disease patients<\/a>:\u00a0<\/strong>In alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, the liver can be affected in addition to the lungs, leading to hepatitis and, in the worst case, cirrhosis. However, because COPD is more widely known and prevalent, there is a risk that many people with alpha-1 deficiency will not be correctly diagnosed: they are prematurely labeled as COPD patients \u2013 and consequently, not treated specifically and therefore not optimally.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By the way:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On average it takes\u00a0<strong>7 years<\/strong>, until an Alpha learns the true cause behind his symptoms.<\/li>\n<li>Until then, he usually\u00a0<strong>5 doctors<\/strong>\u00a0sought out because of his associated health problems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This shows that alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency is still too little known \u2013 to the detriment of (undiagnosed) patients.
