We&#039;re traveling to Graz for the group leader meeting of Alpha1 Austria. My husband, Alexander Niepel, is not only the self-help group leader in Munich but also a member of the Austrian association, so he&#039;s happy to step in as the representative of the German association on our &quot;international mission.&quot; After a five-hour train journey and a subsequent taxi ride, we arrive punctually at the Hotel Staribacher in Styria. We already see familiar faces at reception: Ella Geiblinger and Christa Rapp are gathering everyone for a bus tour of Graz. The city is beautiful and diverse, combining modern art and architecture, such as the Kunsthaus (art museum) or the Murinsel (Mur Island), with the centuries-old traditions of the Franciscan Quarter or the magnificent Baroque Herrengasse (Herrengasse). Our tour guide Maria enthusiastically recounted one anecdote after another from the history of the Styrian capital, while the freezing day-trippers disappeared one by one towards the bus\u2026 Only back at the hotel did we feel our extremities again and were more grateful for a hot tea than any aperitif in the world. Thankfully, we didn&#039;t have to write the essay on Styrian history that Ella had threatened to assign to particularly &quot;attentive and inquisitive students.&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday was a productive day: presentations, discussions, exchanges, questions, additions, disagreements, explanations, amazement, attentive listening, and learning. The manageable size of the group allowed for brief questions and comments at any time. Everyone tried to absorb anything that could be used in their own self-help groups. For example, the story of the Danube bike tour on an e-bike undertaken by one of our Munich members with severely limited lung capacity in the summer gave our Austrian colleagues the idea of organizing a group meeting in the form of a bike trip (the association has agreed to cover the e-bike rental fee). The mention of the upcoming hike on the Camino de Santiago, planned for the end of August by Alpha1 Spain and the Cologne group led by Bernd Dobbert, also met with a positive response. This highlighted a strong interest in international collaboration, not only at the association level but also among the self-help groups themselves. We in Munich also came up with the idea of doing something together with the Salzburg group: it&#039;s 150 km from Munich. Our group has members who drive 150 km for a two-hour meeting!<\/p>\n<p>The exchange was productive: both sides are very keen to attract new members, retain existing ones, keep them informed, and stay up-to-date with the latest research. In Graz, one suggestion was to dedicate one or two pages in each issue of the association&#039;s magazine for Austria and Germany to the same brief information about the disease. This would allow even those unfamiliar with the condition to find something useful in the waiting room, and new members to quickly familiarize themselves with the topic without having to obtain back issues. Regarding the topic of websites, the possibility of creating a DACH website (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) with scientific and other basic information was discussed.<\/p>\n<p>The afternoon session of the meeting was led by a representative of the Social Ministry Service, Styria Regional Office, Magister Bruno Zinkanell, who had some exciting stories from the daily life of a social service official as well as practical tips for people with disabilities ready for those present and was already able to hand out a few forms he had brought along as a precaution.<\/p>\n<p>After an intense workday, we enjoyed another delicious dinner. It seemed as if our hosts wanted to serve us all the specialties from Carinthia and Styria, Tyrol and Salzburg in a single evening. So it was that after a delicate dessert like apple dumplings in a nut crust, a mountain of roast chicken was served as the next course. The temptation to try everything was simply irresistible. But the best part was the exuberant atmosphere at the table. Considering that practically everyone in the group had suffered bitter losses and had several volumes of their own or their loved ones&#039; medical histories on their shelves at home, one appreciates the life-affirming spirit and cheerfulness of our Austrian Alpha friends all the more.<\/p>\n<p>The Styrian cuisine and wine culture, the boundless hospitality of the Austrian &quot;alphas,&quot; and their openly lived, warm, and infectious zest for life will surely draw us back to Austria again. Graz, without numb fingers and blue lips, would certainly be worth another visit.
