„"When the sun of life sets, the stars of memory shine."“

So here we sit, looking at photos from the last group leader meeting, deeply saddened to announce that Heinz Dohmen passed away on Saturday, January 13, 2024. It all happened very suddenly and unexpectedly. He accepted his transplant for many years as if it were simply a part of his life; he never complained, quite the opposite, always smiling, sometimes very quiet, but always reliable and cheerful. He was only 63 and just beginning his retirement; he will be missed by us, the group leaders, and our community. He and his deputy, Birgit, brought the Münsterland group together, creating a close-knit group of friends. The regular meetings were characterized by positive thinking, wonderful exchanges, and, above all, friendship.

Our thoughts are especially with his wife Christine, who will need a lot of strength in the coming time.
Heinz will live on in our hearts!

The year 2023 was finally a year with many highlights again.

After almost 3 years of the Corona pandemic, events were able to take place again this year.

First up was our big anniversary celebration, including the members' meeting and information day, in Bad Wildungen. The whole weekend was a huge success. The information day and members' meeting provided a wealth of information about research and other topics. The subsequent Saturday evening 20+2 anniversary celebration was simply fantastic. Many thanks to the organizers!

Our Alpha1 group work is also slowly returning to normal.

Our first group meeting took place on July 22, 2023, and the second on September 23, 2023. Both meetings featured lively discussions on current topics. We'll see what ideas we come up with for next year! Lunch was also a must, and as always, we were treated to a delicious meal at our usual venue. After about three and a half hours, we concluded the meetings and agreed to meet again as soon as possible!

In order to keep this promise, we have planned the following dates for 2024:

1. 23.03.2024
2. 29.06.2024
3. 19.10.2024

As always, our meeting will take place at the

Waldhaus an de Miälkwellen
Grevener Straße 43
The event will take place in 49549 Ladbergen.

Start: 11:00 a.m.,
End: approx. 2:30 pm

Please register, if possible, at least one week in advance. This helps us estimate the number of participants and inform our venue. Of course, later registration or spontaneous participation is still possible.

As in 2022, we were represented by our group leader from the SHG Münsterland, Heinz Dohmen, and his wife Christiane. We were able to set up our stand quickly (see pictures).

For the first time, the event was led solely by the WZO Patient Advisory Board.

The aim of this event is to provide information and opportunities for exchange for patients and their families before and after transplantation. And this aim was achieved in every respect.

Excellent lecturers who took the time to answer all questions from the audience after their presentations. Simply top-notch!

The nice thing was that we also met members from other self-help groups of Alpha1 Germany and were able to exchange ideas during the breaks.

Even from our self-help group, two members, Ute and Marlies, who are about to be listed, were at this event with their husbands (see picture).

Our conclusion – a complete success and should definitely be repeated in 2024!

Two months after our anniversary event in Bad Wildungen in April, we are still very impressed.

We in our group would also like to do something together again. 

Therefore, Birgit and I have planned two dates for this year.

Our first meeting is scheduled for July 22, 2023.

We would like to schedule the second meeting for September 23, 2023.

As always, our meeting will take place at the

End: approx. 2:30 pm

This time it's about scheduling a meeting at the UKM Münster.

I am in contact with Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Pavel Strnad.

Most people know Dr. Pavel Strnad from our annual meetings of Alpha1 Germany and from the University of Aachen.

This year, Aachen will again host an "Aachen Alpha1 Antitrypsin Deficiency Day for Patients." Since this event is taking place in Aachen and many people are unable to attend due to the distance, Dr. Pavel Strnad's team would organize a meeting at the University Hospital Münster (UKM) if enough participants register. At this meeting, liver examinations will be performed.

There is currently no exact date for the meeting in Münster.
If we receive enough registrations, I will announce this on our website.
As soon as I receive the current flyer from Aachen University, I will publish it immediately.

We were well represented by group leader Heinz Dohmen and his wife Christiane.

The event was extremely well organized. We were able to set up our stand quickly (see pictures).

We were the only ones who set up a stall with pre-existing medical conditions.

This was solely about lung, liver, and kidney transplantation and aftercare.
