A successful children's book

I eagerly awaited the children's companion book on Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency from Alpha1 Germany. I was well aware of how long this project had occupied the creators and how difficult it is to convey such a sensitive topic in a way that, in addition to all the factual information, the affected child emerges from the book feeling empowered.

Bravo! You've created a truly exceptional introductory resource for children. The texts are highly professional and appropriately enhanced with illustrations. Anyone who thinks it's easy to write "just" for children is mistaken. Concise texts require the utmost care and expertise. As someone not directly affected by the issue, writer Ute Battig has formulated the essential initial information. Ralph the seal, who also serves as the logo for Alpha1 Children, takes the reader on a journey through the diverse animal kingdom. I find this extremely effective in fostering a sense of identity and absolutely brilliant. Just like the watercolor line drawings by Carmen Fuchs, which perfectly frame the seriousness of the topic with unobtrusive, lighthearted, and vibrant images. Even the change in typography has a pleasing effect on the text design.

With its explanatory section for adults and the publisher's page, this booklet is a truly helpful resource for coping with this rare chronic illness. As a children's librarian with many years of experience, I have had the opportunity to review numerous books designed to support children through challenging circumstances, and therefore, from a professional perspective, I can only praise this children's book and congratulate everyone involved. In addition to Alpha1 members, who can obtain this booklet free of charge and should make frequent use of it, distribution in Alpha1 centers, pulmonary clinics, and by pulmonologists in private practice could also be beneficial and helpful.
