I am a senior consultant at the Thorax Clinic of Heidelberg University Hospital and a specialist in pulmonology with additional qualifications in intensive care medicine and infectious diseases. I completed my medical training at Saarland University in Homburg/Saar. As a Principal Investigator at the German Center for Lung Research (DZL) in the COPD Disease Area, my clinical and scientific focus lies in COPD, intensive care and respiratory medicine, as well as in the research of biomarkers, comorbidities, and sex and gender aspects in chronic lung diseases. I head the Heidelberg Alpha-1 Center and am the national coordinator of the EARCO network (European Alpha-1 Research Collaboration). Another focus of my work is in the field of clinical health services research, particularly in the PRiVENT project, which develops strategies for the prevention and weaning of patients from long-term mechanical ventilation. Within the German Society for Pneumology (DGP) Section A2 - COPD, I am the deputy spokesperson. Furthermore, I am committed to networking research and clinical practice, as well as promoting young scientists in pulmonology.
