There is still limited knowledge about the impact of severe alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency in pregnant women. However, there is evidence suggesting that AAT plays a role in conception and pregnancy. Associations between low AAT levels and pregnancy-related complications such as preeclampsia, miscarriage, and premature birth have been described in the literature.
Because alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency is often only discovered at an advanced age, many women have given birth to children without knowing about their genetic defect; a few report complications in retrospect.
