Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AAT deficiency) is the most common inherited disease in Northern and Central Europe. Those affected should be strongly advised to refrain from smoking, as smokers with AAT deficiency almost certainly develop pulmonary emphysema between the ages of 40 and 50.
