Professional associations are calling for an exemption for the Production of propellant-driven metered-dose inhalers for inhaled medications until 2030
In the interest of climate protection, the European Union plans to limit the production of propellant-driven metered-dose inhalers (MDIs) starting in 2025. The heads of several major lung societies have issued a joint statement on this matter. While the societies unanimously support the need to curb climate change, particularly for the benefit of lung patients, they emphasize that MDIs represent the only possible therapy for a group of severely ill lung patients. According to industry sources, environmentally friendly MDIs should be available by around 2030. Therefore, the societies are jointly appealing to the EU to grant an exemption for the use of MDIs for inhaled medication until then and simultaneously call for accelerated research and development of alternative MDIs.
