On Saturday, June 11th, some of us met again at the 2nd Aachen Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency Patient Day to have the often-overlooked liver involvement in AAT deficiency systematically investigated between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., while also ensuring lung function was properly assessed. The multicenter study group, with its study center in Aachen, used various examination methods, such as FibroScan®, lung function tests, and laboratory analyses. Furthermore, they explored how individuals might benefit from new drug trials.

The day in numbers:

Sixty-six patients were examined, 43 of whom had Pi*ZZ. There were a total of 18 initial examinations and 48 follow-up examinations. The team, led by PD Pavel Strnad, was ideally staffed with 15 people on the clinical side and nine people working concurrently in the laboratory.
In addition to the examinations, there was a lively exchange among the patients at the buffet and at the information stands of CSL, Grifols and us, as well as interesting lectures at noon and in the afternoon.

It was a thoroughly successful day, which took place in cooperation with Alpha1 Deutschland e. V. and was sponsored by the companies Grifols and CSL Behring.
Thank you to the wonderful team in Aachen who do such a great job for us patients!
