Position paper: Opening up the DMP – COPD section to patients with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency in Germany

The Institute for Evidence-Based Health and Care Management (IfGV). has been researching and involved in the field of rare diseases for more than five years.
Together with Alpha1 Deutschland eV, the IfGV would like to draw attention to an easily solvable supply problem for patients with Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency with the attached position paper.
Since the main symptoms of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency also apply to other diseases such as COPD or asthma, the disease often goes undetected for a long time in many affected individuals.
This not only results in serious consequences for the course of the illness for the patients, but also in unnecessary additional expenses for health insurance providers.
The Disease Management Program (DMP) for COPD is a structured treatment program implemented in Germany with the goal of providing optimal care for chronically ill patients with COPD. This program has helped many COPD patients improve their condition and quality of life. Furthermore, the program optimizes resources for healthcare providers and payers, leading to cost savings.
The IfGV and Alpha1 Germany are advocating for the inclusion of the diagnosis of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency in the COPD disease management program (DMP). Only minor adjustments would be necessary.
Including Alpha-1 patients in the COPD DMP would represent a significant improvement in care for patients, doctors and payers.
