„"Doctor and patient in conversation – more knowledge, up-to-date and expert information," is the motto of the patient magazine. With this focus, the 64-page magazine, now in its sixth year, is aimed primarily at patients and their families. The conversation with the doctor or therapist is also a key focus.
Active communication and up-to-date information are the most important parameters of the magazine; patients describe their personal experiences, ask questions that are answered by the respective experts, or report on current events.
Similarly, leading scientists explain complex topics in an unconventional yet accessible way, taking readers along to the most important scientific events and research activities. Respiratory and physiotherapists provide vivid, practical guidance for everyday life and offer highly practical assistance.
The patient magazine "Patient Library" focuses on respiratory and lung diseases, with an emphasis on COPD, pulmonary emphysema, and alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, but also covers all other diseases such as asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, bronchiectasis, pneumonia, etc. Measures from the entire treatment spectrum, from inhalation and rehabilitation to long-term oxygen therapy and non-invasive ventilation, are explained in detail.
Those affected should be supported in optimizing their knowledge of the disease and the associated treatment concept. Improving coping with the disease and ensuring sustainable compliance will determine the focus of the reporting.
The aim of the editorial team and the respective authors is to provide evidence-based information based on current science.
The editorial team is significantly supported by a patient advisory board, which includes, for example, Marion Wilkens, Chairwoman of Alpha1 Deutschland eV and Ursula Krütt-Bockemühl, German Oxygen and Respiratory League LOT eV, as well as a scientific advisory board with members from all relevant disciplines.
All advisory board members thankfully perform their duties on a voluntary basis, as do all other authors of each issue.
The journal is published by Patienten-Bibliothek gemeinnützige GmbH, www.patienten-bibliothek.de, which is particularly committed to publishing and distributing evidence-based printed materials for patients to strengthen self-help.
A particular concern of the patient library is therefore to bring media partners, such as Alpha1 Deutschland e.V., more into the public eye through regular reporting on their concerns and consistent publication of contact details and association information. Synergies are used for mutual support whenever possible.
The printed version of the magazine is distributed to doctors, clinics, pharmacies, therapists, self-help groups, etc. via parcel post completely free of charge.
Only orders for single copies incur a fee of €6.50 due to high shipping and postage costs. Online readings at www.patienten-bibliothek.de are also available free of charge.
Currently, 30,000 copies of the patient edition are distributed per issue; since autumn 2019, a special medical edition has also been published with a print run of 4,000 copies, the contents of which are identical to those of the patient edition.
In addition to the specialist journal "Patienten-Bibliothek" (Patient Library), patient guides are published on specific individual topics. These are published by the Patienten-Bibliothek gGmbH (Patient Library non-profit limited liability company) as well as other organizations such as COPD – Deutschland eV (COPD – Germany) and the patient organization Lungenemphysem COPD Deutschland (Patient Organization for Lung Emphysema COPD Germany).
