ELTMANN/NUREMBERG – Sandra Böhmer from Eltmann in Lower Franconia suffers from a rare hereditary disease, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, or alpha-1 for short. The disease can lead to lung destruction. It is often confused with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Böhmer spoke with the NZ about the difficult path to diagnosis, the effects of the disease, and what she hopes for as an affected individual.
